In the wake of the cancellation of this year’s Wimbledon tournament (29 June – 12 July 2020) on 1st April 2020, the WTA has also suspended its tournament operations until at least 13th July 2020. Due to this decision of the women’s professional tennis players association the bett1open in Berlin – scheduled originally for 13-21 June 2020 – are also affected.

The organizers of the grass court tournament on the premises of the LTTC “Rot Weiß” e.V. have carefully considered all options and finally decided that the bett1open can’t be held at a later stage this year. One of the many reasons was that due to the current developments of the global COVID-19 pandemic a prolongation of the measures in place by the WTA cannot be ruled out. Looking at a possible alternate date and a crowded tournament calendar, which has furthermore to be cleared by the WTA, there was no other way but to reschedule the bett1open to next year. Thus, the premiere of this women’s tennis highlight will be held from June 12-20, 2021!

“We were on course with our preparations for the date in June and wanted to offer our fans in Berlin and all partners a unique grass court event at the LTTC Rot-Weiß. Taking into account the development of the continuous Corona pandemic as well as all the related measures and restrictions makes it impossible to hold the bett1open this year. Naturally, we share all the measures of the authorities as well as the WTA which have been put in place to assure the health and safety of the players, our staff and the fans. Now we have to look forward and muster all our forces for the tournament next year”, stresses tournament director Barbara Rittner.

Adam Szpyt, managing director of main and title sponsor bett1 promises his continued full support for the grass court tournament in Berlin: “We feel obliged to support the tournament organizers in this tough situation. We are convinced of the success of the project and will thus consequently continue to pursue our goal to establish world class women’s tennis in Berlin in the next years”, says Szpyt.

„Since 1991 we are organizing sports events and – of all things – in our 30th year as organizers there is an unpredictable worldwide crisis. In this hard time I want to thank the LTTC Rot Weiß, headed by President Dr. Dietrich Wolter, the city of Berlin, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club of Wimbledon and in particular our title sponsor bett1. With the support of all our partners we are able to take over all the responsibilities in our area for this year and can also start with the perfect preparation for the bett1open 2021”, explains Edwin Weindorfer, tournament organizer of the bett1open and CEO of the e|motion group.

We are in the process of working on customer friendly solutions for already purchased tickets, which aim on the one hand to keep the tickets valid for the bett1open 2021 and on the other hand to refund the purchased tickets. We ask for your understanding that we have to wait on the decisions of the responsible authorities before we are able to take the necessary steps. As soon as appropriate laws are in effect we will publish our further approach in accordance with our ticketing partners on our website
