Gauff and Kenin commit to premiere on grass in Berlin.
bett1 new main sponsor of the Berlin women’s tennis tournament.
Preparations for the first edition of the WTA Premier grass court tournament on the premises of the LTTC “Rot-Weiß” e.V. in Berlin are going ahead full steam. After German local heroes Angelique Kerber and Julia Görges, now the upcoming US stars Cori “Coco” Gauff and Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin have committed to playing in Berlin. The promoter e|motion sports was able secure bett1 GmbH, a highly successful producer of mattresses and sleeping systems from Berlin, as main and title sponsor. We are very happy to present the new title of the grass court tournament: bett1 open.
Cori Gauff has had a comet like rise at last year’s Wimbledon tournament. After making it through the qualification, the US teenager ousted five-times Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the first round having her sensational run only ended in the round of the last sixteen. In October of 2019, Gauff won her first WTA tournament in Linz, Austria, where she had already been eliminated in the second qualification round but made it into the main draw as “lucky loser”, never looking back and going on to win her maiden WTA title. At this year’s Australian Open Gauff again made the headlines when she beat reigning champion Naomi Osaka in the third round, reaching the round of the last sixteen at a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in her young career. There she had to bow to the later tournament winner Sofia Kenin, who will also play in Berlin.
“For being still so young she already had a tremendous athletic development. Her potential is huge and I’m sure that she will become a world-class player. She is so talented that I am confident she might be able to ring in a new era in women’s tennis. Watching her here in Berlin will give fans an idea of what I’m talking about”, says tournament director Barbara Rittner about the 15-year old shooting star. Gauff is already looking forward to Berlin: “I have heard a lot of cool things about the city and I’m very excited about what will await me there. Being played just before Wimbledon, this tournament is very important to me.”
Sofia Kenin not only beat Gauff in the round of the last sixteen in three sets at this year’s Australian Open, but also eliminated the world no. 1, Ashleigh Barty (AUS) in the semis and former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza (ESP) in the final. The biggest victory in her career made the 21-year old the world no. 5. Last year, Kenin emerged victorious in three tournaments, one of them on grass in Mallorca. “Sofia Kenin has surprised a lot of people with her win in Melbourne but has also shown that she is able to win big titles. Her victory in Mallorca last year also proved that she has the perfect game for grass courts.
